Here is a list of medications and products you should keep on hand for your fur kids when they are not feeling well. 

Allergic reactions; itchy skin; insect bites, and coughing:

Benadryl (diphenhydramine)- The dosage is 1.0mg/ pound of body weight. You may repeat the dosage every 8-12 hours as necessary. It comes as a 25mg capsule or tablet, and a liquid 12.5mg/tsp (5mL).

Atarax (Hydroxyzine)- The dosage is 1.0mg/ 2 pounds of body weight, and may be repeated every 8-12 hours as necessary. It comes as a 10, 20, or 50mg tablet. 


Zyrtec (Cetirizine hydrochloride)- The dosage is 5mg for small dogs or cats, and 10-20mg for large dogs once daily. It comes as a 10mg tablet, or a liquid 1mg/mL. 

Chlor-trimeton (Chlorpheniramine maleate)- The dose is 2mg for small dogs and cats, and up to 8mg for large dogs. It comes as a 2 or 4mg tablet.

Upset stomach or Gastroenteritis: 

Signs of nausea can include drooling, licking lips and vomiting. 

Pepcid AC (famotidine)- The dose is 0.25mg/ pound of body weight one to twice daily. It comes in a 10 or 20mg tablet.

Diarrhea, loose or soft stool:

Pepto-Bismol- DOGS ONLY. The dose is 1mg/5 pounds of body weight up to 3 times daily.!

Proviable Forte (probiotic with kaolin pectate)- For both cats and dogs, follow package instructions.

Low blood sugar (puppies, kittens, or animals on insulin therapy): Honey or Karo Syrup- A 10 pound pet can be given 1-2 tsp and then feed a regular meal as they  improve. If no improvement occurs, call your veterinarian right away.

Foot Dermatitis:

Listerine (brown bottle)- It can be used as an astringent to dry feet and help prevent a yeast infection. Apply to paws every 12 hours. !

Remember to contact your veterinarian if signs of illness persist. Never give your pet aspirin, ibuprofen (motrin), or acetaminophen (Tylenol). These products can be dangerous to use on your pets.

Broken nail that is bleeding: Key steps:

  • Apply pressure: Immediately press firmly on the cut nail with a clean cloth or tissue. 

  • Use a styptic powder: If available, dab a small amount of styptic powder onto the bleeding area. 

  • Alternative powders: If you don't have styptic powder, you can try using cornstarch, baking powder, or flour. 

  • Keep the area clean: Once the bleeding stops, wash the area with soap and water and apply a bandage if needed.
